What is crystalline silica in worktop materials?

Crystalline silica is a naturally occurring mineral found in stone, sand and many manufactured building materials. In worktop surfaces it matters because cutting, grinding and polishing release it as a fine airborne dust, respirable crystalline silica, which is a recognised occupational health hazard and is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a Group 1 carcinogen.

The health risk arises during fabrication, not from an installed worktop in a kitchen. Finished, installed surfaces do not release respirable dust in normal use.

How much crystalline silica do different worktop materials contain?

Content varies enormously by material type, and the differences are the reason the category is changing.

Traditional engineered quartz is typically around 90% crystalline silica by weight, because quartz is the material.

Reduced-silica engineered surfaces are recent reformulations that replace much of the quartz with other minerals. Manufacturers publish figures for these, commonly in the region of 10% to 40% depending on the product line.

Silica-free and near-zero surfaces are mineral surface products marketed at 1% or less.

Natural stone varies by type. Granite typically contains a substantial proportion of quartz; marble and limestone contain very little.

Sintered stone and porcelain vary by formulation, and many manufacturers do not publish a figure at all, which is why a large share of these materials in our registry carry no classification rather than an assumed one.

Why did low-silica materials appear?

Because regulation and litigation made engineered stone's silica content a commercial problem rather than a technical footnote.

Australia prohibited the manufacture, supply, processing and installation of engineered stone from July 2024, the first national ban of its kind, following a rise in silicosis among stone fabrication workers. Regulators elsewhere responded with tighter enforcement rather than prohibition. Every major engineered stone manufacturer now offers a reduced-silica or silica-free line, and those lines are the fastest-changing part of the market.

How is silica dust controlled during fabrication?

By engineering controls, not by material choice alone.

In Great Britain, respirable crystalline silica is regulated under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations, which require employers to control exposure and to keep it as low as reasonably practicable. The Health and Safety Executive publishes the applicable workplace exposure limit in its EH40 document; as of the most recent published edition we have checked, the long-term limit for respirable crystalline silica is 0.1 mg/m³ averaged over eight hours, a figure that has been in place since 2006 and which has been the subject of ongoing debate about alignment with lower limits used elsewhere. Confirm the current figure directly with HSE before relying on it.

Recognised controls include water suppression, on-tool extraction, enclosed cutting, air monitoring, health surveillance and appropriate respiratory protective equipment. These apply to every silica-containing material, including reduced-silica ones.

A lower classification tier does not remove the need for dust control. Classification only. Fabrication controls still apply.
